SERVICES AREAS

  • Action Research – Undertake an action research on the developmental challenges posed by energy, natural resources and climate change to development the Horn of Africa.  In the context of CEEN’s action research approach over the years, a number of pilot adaptation programs will be carried out in the communities across the different regions.  Theses intervention programs will be carried out with service providers in public and private sectors and civil society organizations. The specific problems to be addressed by the pilot activities will depend partly on the finding of the vulnerability assessment.

·       Policy Engagement and Communication – Every year considerable research is conducted in research institutions in Somaliland/Somalia and findings from the research are disseminated through various academic publications. Often these findings only end up in libraries, drawers and the pages of academic journals without being effectively used by policy makers and practitioners in the country. Consequently, the purpose of the research activity in terms of contributing to development strategies is defeated. We aim to ensure that the wider public is informed about the outcomes of research in order to understand the benefits accruing to them, their community and the country as a whole.

·       Capacity Building – One common factor, which is essential for the success of CEEN is the importance of capacity building and sustainability of key institutions involved in the sector. Experience over the years in the The of Africa particularly Somaliland in particular have shown that one of the major problems that have militated against the successful implementation of development programs has been poor institutional and capacity base of implementing agencies.

 1.      ENERGY

Energy defines modern life: it lights, heats and cools our businesses and homes, gets us from A to B, and is increasingly safe, sustainable, reliable and affordable. Our aim is to help better understand energy in all its forms. TEERII conducts researches and gathers different data on energy information including books, journals, magazines, reports, and analyses to support specific work and studies.

Access to electricity in the poorest countries remains a challenge, energy efficiency needs to improve and renewable energy is seen as future green energy in electricity sector. In the Somali context millions of people remain without electricity while access to CEEN cooking fuels and technologies needs dedicated attention. In addition, if Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 13 and related Goals are to be met, much higher levels of ambition are required with regard to renewable energy, including transportation and heating.

Therefore, we aim to work with the public sector and private sector to ensure universal access to affordable electricity by 2030 as per the SDG 7 which means investing in CEEN energy sources such as solar, wind and thermal. In addition, expanding infrastructure and upgrading technology to provide CEEN energy sources in all developing countries is a crucial goal that can both encourage growth and help the environment.

Gums & Resins

Dry forests comprise the largest forest resources in Somaliland and their contribution to rural livelihoods, the national economy and ecosystem stability is significant, although not yet properly accounted for. An important feature of Somaliland’s dry forests is their richness in frankincense notably the Acacia, Boswellia and Commiphora species. These trees are the source of gums and gum resins, which are the most important export commodities of the Somali forestry sector.

Somaliland is well recognized with respect to the production and supply of natural gum for a long time. The country is well endowed with over 50 gum and resin bearing species from Acacia, Boswellia and Commiphora species. Globally the usage and benefits of gums and resins had increased and to this affect numbers of mega international companies are turning to Somaliland to consider in investing in this sector. The production and export had not reached maximum level owning to lack of coordination and leadership in Somaliland.

·       Research and surveys facilitate effective research and monitoring to inform decisions regarding management of forests in Somaliland, the Government, and all relevant stakeholders in order to spur the Gums and Resins sector development within our harnessing the natural resource agenda such as frankincense and energy.

·       Enhance and support the full realization of the value chain organisations to forge a common strategic vision for the G&R sector.

·       Forster Public-private consultation platform to challenge the points of view of the public and the private sector.

Food security exist when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life (FAO). This requires a nutritionally diverse diet. Nutrition security is exist when food security is combined with education, a sanitary environment, adequate health services and proper care and feeding practices to ensure a healthy life for all household members (UNSCN).

Food security is achieved, if adequate food is available and accessible for and satisfactorily utilized by all individuals at all times to live a healthy and happy life. Accordingly, Food and nutrition security (FNS) has four basic dimensions, namely, availability, access, utilization and stability. Availability implies that people have adequate food (in terms of quantity, quality, safety, socio-cultural acceptability) readily at their disposal. Access requires that all
households and their members have sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods through production, purchase or supply. Utilization is about the ability of the human body to ingest and metabolize food. Stability refers to the availability, accessibility and utilization of adequate food at all times
