IDEASS – Centre for Energy and Environmental resources

IDEASS, a research, training and consultancy firm with extensive Somaliland knowledge and excellent track record in capacity development forms, the second partner within the consortium. IDEASS is a leading Somaliland energy consulting business operating primarily in the Somali peninsula region. IDEASS was founded and established in 2015 by experience energy sectors consultants from Somaliland, UK, and Canada. IDEASS is a privately owned institute with many years of project experience  a range of sustainable energy solutions. Its main mission is to conduct research and develop coordinated national level policies that support a reliable and expanding energy portfolio that is environmentally responsible. Furthermore the institute has an objective of enabling relevant parties to understand and engage in the national energy debate; and to take advantage of the market opportunities ensuring Somaliland’s economic development and competitiveness.

Pre-Feasibility Studies for  Renewable Energy Technologies

The feasibility study of Renewable Energy Technologies is a very important stage of any project. Ideally a visit is made to the site first and what needs to be done at the site include;

  • Clarify exactly what the client expects of the system
  • Project any planned expansion of the system
  • Make an assessment of the system energy requirements and financial requirements
  • Establish the pattern of system use
  • Establish the degree of power security needed (Differs per location)
  • Assess installation logistics and life cycle cost analysis

Trainings & Capacity Development

The IDEASS provides accredited and non-accredited courses including:

  • Solar Energy Training
  • T1 & T2 This course is the entry point to become a licensed Solar technician or Solar products vendor. Participants receive comprehensive know-how for photovoltaics, hands-on training with technical components, designing optimized PV stand-alone systems to apply for a T2 license from the Energy Regulatory Commission.
  • T3 Grid Tie Participants will learn the technical planning, design and cost calculations for larger PV systems. Positive course completion enables to apply for a T3 license at Centre of Excellence of Renewable Sources (CERS).
  • Solar Water Pumping Solar powered water pumping represents a major achievement for modern water distribution. The training will be held at CSERS) with an installed surface and a submerged water pumping unit. Practical exercises in stand-alone and hybrid (grid or genset backup) configuration to learn the most important operational parameters. Proprietary manufacturer software will be used to design and calculate PV powered pumping and irrigation systems
  • Energy Management – The training is aimed at giving the participants a broad view on impact of energy efficiency on the environment and business performance of their facilities. Participants will also be able to learn about what opportunities are available in their facilities and practical ways of tapping into those opportunities.

Research and Development

Research, Innovation and Development is a vital part of IDEASS. IDEASS is constantly engaged in research and development of business processes to provide seamless and accurate information for organizations considering inter-continental investments. We support and advice, organizations, government institutions, local communities, SMEs in Somaliland in designing and implementing the optimal energy system based on the specific requirements.

Keeping track of all energy data can take time and resources away from businesses. We offer various services for managing energy data, including software and in-house customized service specifically designed to suit the needs of our individual clients.

Environmental Studies and Assessments

The multi-disciplinary staff puts IDEASS in the forefront to effectively deal with environmental and social aspects of project development, including integration of environmental and social issues in our projects, as well as developing and introducing effective mitigating measures during the early planning process.

Conflict Analysis:

Understanding local conflict dynamics is critical in ensuring a “Do No Harm” approach to Programme implementation. On behalf of DANIDA, IDEASS conducted conflict research in Erigavo and Elafwein Districts in Sanaag with a special focus on issues of natural resources and social cohesion.

Governance & Democratisation

Peaceful Election Process in Somaliland

IDEASS was contracted by SONSAF & EU to undertake the pre-election assessment report to understand the factors that may hinder or aid the peaceful election process in the Parliamentary and Municipality elections in 2021.

Developed Situation Room Guideline

SONSAF contracted IDEASS to developed the manual for guiding the election situation room (ESR) set up to monitor and election process in the country with the support of community volunteers trained to report election incidents

Education

Third-Party Monitoring

Working in collaboration with various donor number of programmes including Health, and governance and humanitarian projects, IDEASS provides in-country monitoring and evaluation support to health, and governance support activities throughout Somalia. Initiatives have included routine monitoring, evaluation, impact assessments, site monitoring. .
