The purpose of the Centre for Energy and Environmental Resources (CEEN) Resources is to develop and disseminate knowledge, skills and good practice towards a safer, more secure and sustainable development system. The CEEN resources is the professional body for the energy industry, delivering good practice and professionalism across the depth and breadth of the sector. In addition, the institute serves as a catalyst for the development of a sustainable and competitive energy, water and environmental sectors in the Horn of Africa. CEEN was established in 2015 by group of energy experts from the Diaspora (UK, USA and EU) who felt to contribute in the enhancement and development of the energy sector of the region. TEERI works with vast array of organisations and network to seek and promote a reliable and sustainable energy sector for economic growth and alleviating poverty.
The Centre aims to influence the practice and policy for sustainable socio- economic development.
Mission is to be the leading organization on the development of and renewable energy and resource management
Vision is to be the catalyst for reaching energy universal coverage and sustainable development
Objectives:
SERVICES AREAS
1. ENERGY
Energy defines modern life: it lights, heats and cools our businesses and homes, gets us from A to B, and is increasingly safe, sustainable, reliable and affordable. Our aim is to help better understand energy in all its forms. TEERII conducts researches and gathers different data on energy information including books, journals, magazines, reports, and analyses to support specific work and studies.
Access to electricity in the poorest countries remains a challenge, energy efficiency needs to improve and renewable energy is seen as future green energy in electricity sector. In the Somali context millions of people remain without electricity while access to CEEN cooking fuels and technologies needs dedicated attention. In addition, if Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7, 13 and related Goals are to be met, much higher levels of ambition are required with regard to renewable energy, including transportation and heating.
Therefore, we aim to work with the public sector and private sector to ensure universal access to affordable electricity by 2030 as per the SDG 7 which means investing in CEEN energy sources such as solar, wind and thermal. In addition, expanding infrastructure and upgrading technology to provide CEEN energy sources in all developing countries is a crucial goal that can both encourage growth and help the environment.
Strategy & planning
The making of a strategy and plan for the production, transmission, distribution and use of energy is the starting point for efficient energy management at all levels – from companies to local authorities and government. TEERII’s capabilities in energy strategy and planning span the entire energy chain from production to end-use. Further, we assist public as well as private sector clients, including municipalities, utilities, central agencies, IPS, developers and industries to prepare energy strategies and action plans. Our services include:
ü Strategic energy plans and contract management
ü Policy analyses
ü Urban energy master plans
ü Energy efficiency mapping and analyses
ü Advice on energy legislation
ü Feasibility studies
ü Project proposals
Energy Access
TEERI works on initiatives that use sustainable energy as a catalyst for socio-economic development of rural communities in a gender-inclusive manner. Innovations in technological solutions, business models, partnerships, and knowledge generation remain the cornerstones of our action-research.
Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is a key driving force in meeting environmental and climate goals. TEERII works closely with large and small industries and the buildings sector to help improve their energy performance. We have demonstrated a range of technologies and practices that have helped small and medium enterprises in the The of Africa to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their profitability.
Renewable Energy
TEERII focuses on establishing performance benchmarks and quality standards for renewable energy technologies. We also build research partnerships and programs with industry and academia, to develop new solutions in solar, wind and biomass energy.
The The of African region is at high risk of environmental catastrophe and natural hazards, notably drought and desertification. The Somali peninsula features a topography characteristic of semi-arid deserts and mountain ranges, with the land rising from 900m to 2,100m above sea level. The climate is arid or semi-arid, with rainfall patterns of two rainy and two dry seasons. Land degradation is a prominent environmental issue in the country, driven by drought, desertification and poor agricultural and pastoral practices.
Research and data
The goal of the TEERII is to bring about change for sustainable development by bridging science and policy through the provision of integrated analysis that supports decision makers. TEERII involves a wide range of innovative research related to environmental change with a focus on analytical methods for multi-stressor assessment of social vulnerability and adaptive management, using a toolkits including the Knowledge Elicitation Tools, agent based social simulation, vulnerability mapping, decision screening, discrete choice analysis, qualitative comparative assessment, social networking and the development of decision support tools to screen adaptation options using a variety of available methodologies
Environmental Waste
Waste management crisis has serious implications for its environment, economy and public health. We focus on creating technologies and solutions that minimize waste generation and convert all waste into useful products.
Environmental Studies and Assessments
he multi-disciplinary staff puts TEERII in the forefront to effectively deal with environmental and social aspects of project development, including integrating of environmental and social issues in our projects, as well as developing and introducing effective mitigating measures during the early planning process.
Gums & Resins
Dry forests comprise the largest forest resources in Somaliland and their contribution to rural livelihoods, the national economy and ecosystem stability is significant, although not yet properly accounted for. An important feature of Somaliland’s dry forests is their richness in frankincense notably the Acacia, Boswellia and Commiphora species. These trees are the source of gums and gum resins, which are the most important export commodities of the Somali forestry sector.
Somaliland is well recognized with respect to the production and supply of natural gum for a long time. The country is well endowed with over 50 gum and resin bearing species from Acacia, Boswellia and Commiphora species. Globally the usage and benefits of gums and resins had increased and to this affect numbers of mega international companies are turning to Somaliland to consider in investing in this sector. The production and export had not reached maximum level owning to lack of coordination and leadership in Somaliland.
· Research and surveys facilitate effective research and monitoring to inform decisions regarding management of forests in Somaliland, the Government, and all relevant stakeholders in order to spur the Gums and Resins sector development within our harnessing the natural resource agenda such as frankincense and energy.
· Enhance and support the full realization of the value chain organisations to forge a common strategic vision for the G&R sector.
· Forster Public-private consultation platform to challenge the points of view of the public and the private sector.
· Invest and improve the methods of harvesting (including safe and sustainable harvesting techniques)
· Build the capacities of stakeholders from government, civil society and the private sector including skills both in technical aspects of resource management as well as best practices and broader management skills. As well as skills for understanding multiple value systems, world view, beliefs, culture and perceptions about how frankincense should be used and managed and how people should be involved
· Knowledge Sharing and Knowledge Management facilitate effective information access and exchange, information management, and use of traditional knowledge for management of resins in the country, the Government, and all relevant stakeholders
The institute is striving to assist the public and private sector to develop policies and skills needed for effective food security to reduce the hunger in the country
Food security exist when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life (FAO). This requires a nutritionally diverse diet. Nutrition security is exist when food security is combined with education, a sanitary environment, adequate health services and proper care and feeding practices to ensure a healthy life for all household members (UNSCN).
Food security is achieved, if adequate food is available and accessible for and satisfactorily utilized by all individuals at all times to live a healthy and happy life. Accordingly, Food and nutrition security (FNS) has four basic dimensions, namely, availability, access, utilization and stability. Availability implies that people have adequate food (in terms of quantity, quality, safety, socio-cultural acceptability) readily at their disposal. Access requires that all
households and their members have sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods through production, purchase or supply. Utilization is about the ability of the human body to ingest and metabolize food. Stability refers to the availability, accessibility and utilization of adequate food at all times
